Consistent sleep and wake times

Circadian rhythm research links irregular sleep schedules to disrupted metabolic hormone patterns, including those governing appetite and glucose regulation. A consistent schedule, even more than total sleep duration alone, has been associated with better markers in some studies.

Stress and cortisol

Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, and cortisol affects blood sugar by signaling the liver to release stored glucose. This is a normal short-term survival response, but sustained elevation is linked in research to worse long-term metabolic outcomes. Practices like regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress-management techniques have evidence behind their role in moderating this.

Hydration

Adequate water intake supports normal kidney function, which plays a role in blood sugar regulation. Some research has associated chronic mild dehydration with higher blood sugar readings, though this is a less-studied area than diet or exercise.

Building habits that last

Behavior-change research consistently finds that small, specific, repeatable habits (a 10-minute walk after dinner, a consistent bedtime) tend to stick better than large, all-at-once overhauls. None of these habits are a substitute for medical care — anyone managing diabetes, prediabetes, or another metabolic condition should incorporate them under guidance from their healthcare provider.
